Basketball On Court
Alyza Winston, a 5'7" junior guard for the Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team, has been turning heads on the court with her scoring prowess and leadership skills. Her passion for the game was reignited after a series of setbacks and challenges that tested her determination and resilience.

A Difficult Road to Success

Winston, a native of Muskegon, Michigan, started playing basketball at the age of five and quickly fell in love with the sport. She showed promise as a young player and was determined to make it to the next level. However, her journey was not without obstacles.

As a high school sophomore at Catholic Central in Grand Rapids, Winston tore her ACL and was forced to sit out for several months. She was devastated but refused to let her injury define her. With the help of her family and coaches, she worked hard to rehabilitate her knee and come back stronger than ever.

But just as she was getting back into the groove of things, tragedy struck. In the summer of 2017, Winston's father passed away from a heart attack at the age of 43. She was heartbroken and felt like giving up basketball altogether. However, she knew that her father would have wanted her to keep playing and pursuing her dreams.

Winston continued to play basketball with a heavy heart and dedicated her performances to her father's memory. She eventually earned a scholarship to play for Michigan State and joined the team in 2018.

Becoming Michigan State's Top Scorer

Winston made an immediate impact for the Spartans, averaging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. She continued to improve in her sophomore year, averaging 18.3 points per game and becoming Michigan State's top scorer.

Winston's scoring ability is a product of her hard work and dedication. She spends countless hours practicing her jump shot and ball handling skills, and she is always pushing herself to improve. Her teammates and coaches have taken notice of her work ethic and leadership, and they look to her for guidance both on and off the court.

Persevering Through Adversity

Winston's success on the court has not come without its challenges. In the summer of 2019, she suffered another setback when she underwent surgery to repair a bone spur in her foot. She was forced to sit out for several months and missed the first five games of the 2019-2020 season.

However, Winston refused to let her injury keep her down. She continued to work hard in the gym and in physical therapy, and she made her season debut on December 15, 2019, against Oakland. She scored 21 points in her first game back and helped lead the Spartans to victory.

Winston's determination and resilience have earned her the respect and admiration of her teammates, coaches, and fans. She has shown that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.

She has overcome adversity to become one of the top basketball players in the country, and she has inspired countless others with her story.
