After graduating from St. Bonaventure, Lanier was drafted first overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1970 NBA draft. He played for the Pistons for ten years before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he played for five more seasons before retiring from the NBA in 1984.
